Rock VS. Pop Music

By Katie Deeser-

There are many different types of music these days. Rock music and Pop music are two of the many interesting genres we see today. Pop music originated in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1950s and you may also hear people use the term “popular music”, they both stand for the same thing. Some examples of older pop music would be Pat Boone, The McGuire Sisters, and Madonna. Some examples of more modern pop music would be Ariana Grande, Adele, and Ed Sheeran. Rock music or “rock and roll” came up in the 1950s and 60s in the United States and the United Kingdom. Rock music often uses electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums, and vocals. Throughout the 60s, the genre began to change and shift into different types and sounds. Some examples of older rock would be Jethro Tull, Billy Haley and his comets, and Elvis Presley. Some more modern examples of Rock would be AC/DC, Fleetwood Mack, Van Halen, and Black Sabath. These genres effected our lives greatly and brought a whole new feeling to the world “modern”. While the most liked music genre of this new generation would be Rap or Hip-hop, Pop and Rock started the music world. Rap and Hip-hop stand at the top of the list at nearly 22% popularity as of 2018, along with Pop in second place at nearly 20%, and Rock following in third at 14%. Music today is important to everyone around the world and it has been a way for people everywhere to express themselves for a long time, and it will be that way for a long time still.
